Red Headed Stepchild

I know a white woman who has had two children by a black man with whom she is no longer involved. She neglects and abuses these children. I wonder if children who do not look like the caretaking parent generally receive worse treatment than other kids. Like the saying ‘Beaten like a red headed stepchild’ indicates, it might be dangerous for a child to be in a ‘family’ that he/she does not physically resemble. Has anyone else seen this phenomenon? Is this just a simple case of Medea sydrome?
