i have spent some time in the northern part of Idaho. I have repeatedly heard it referred to as ‘North Idaho.’ Why is it ‘North’ as opposed to ‘Northern’ idaho? I live in Western Washington, not West Washington, and Los Angeles is in Southern California not South California. Why?

It must depend on the state. Here in Texas, we call the areas North, South, East and West, not Northern, Southern, etc. I live in Northeast Texas. El Paso is in West Texas. I’ve heard national television reporters say, ‘Western Texas’ and I’m like, ‘Where’s that?’
