A friend of mine is of Appalachian heritage. While his name is of Scots-Irish stock, he looks more like a Sicilian or Mexican. I asked him about his heritage and he claimed he was a Melungeon. Can anyone explain what this ethnic group is? I assume there is Indian and Scots-Irish, but how did this ethnic group last as long as it has, as Appalachia is virtually all White with no Native populations that I can think of?
