I find that more people tend to believe in what the media portrays. Coming from Hawai`i I can no longer convince people that what they see on television and the movies in regards to the Hawaiian Islands that what they see is all contrived. In order to understand fully what the culture is, you need to look prior to the coming of Europeans. People make up these parties based on a ‘luau’ theme w/o knowing anything. They have pineapples, grass skirts, ukuleles, all which are not Hawaiian. Pineapple came from South America, the grass skirts were never worn by my ancestors and the ukulele came from a Portuguese island called Madeira.
