LSParticipantThe word nigger is considered derogatory by African Americans, but what does it actually mean or connote?

WilliamMemberIt simply refers to someone who doesn’t know how to behave politely in public places. Someone who does not care about an education. Someone who has little regard for responsible sex or the children it produces. In other words, someone who has no regard for anyone or anything other than themselves.

Susan27500ParticipantI always assumed that it was a slur of the word negro, which is the color black in latin. i also thought it possibly was used to call someone by their color ages ago, and then it eventually turned into a derrogatory word.

Paul30498ParticipantThe use of the word nigger is truly sad. But it is not used much nowadays. One explanation could be that most black slaves to the Americas were from Nigeria and near the Niger river. The word nigger could have come from there. Also, people are divided into three races: Mongoloids, Caucasoids and Negroids, so maybe it came from ‘Negroid.’

Wayne-C24414ParticipantWell, here’s the definition in the dictionary:
Main Entry: nig·ger; Pronunciation: ‘ni-g&r; Function: noun; Etymology: alteration of earlier neger, from Middle French negre, from Spanish or Portuguese negro, from negro black, from Latin niger; Date: 1700;
1 usually offensive, see usage paragraph below : a black person;
2 usually offensive, see usage paragraph below : a member of any dark-skinned race
3 : a member of a socially disadvantaged class of personsUsage of Nigger in senses 1 and 2 can be found in the works of such writers of the past as Joseph Conrad, Mark Twain, and Charles Dickens, but it now ranks as perhaps the most offensive and inflammatory racial slur in English. Its use by and among blacks is not always intended or taken as offensive, but, except in sense 3, it is otherwise a word expressive of racial hatred and bigotry.
