I’ve always been led to believe that Scientology was simply invented by L. Ron Hubbard. There’s also a rumor that he invented it to win a bet with a friend that he could create his own religion and make people follow it. The official Scientology website dismisses this rumor, then goes on to explain that they know Hubbard invented it and pretty much don’t care. This doesn’t help. How do Scientologists justify belief in a ‘religion’ that is acknowledged to have been thought up and practiced by a science fiction author?
