Whenever I order a sandwich in a restaurant, I practically have to plead with them not to put mayonnaise on it, and sometimes I get it that way regardless of the fact that I asked for it to be omitted. Likewise, I do not necessarily need mustard, ketchup, or any other wet condiment on a sandwich, though it does not gross me out and I’ll go ahead and eat it. When I was in Montreal a few years ago I ordered a sandwich at a restaurant and they simply would not let me get by with having the bread dry! Finally they asked me if I would like butter, to which I relented, but I have to wonder: does the rest of the world perceive dry bread on a sandwich as something distasteful and I’ve simply missed the concept? And it may be my imagination, but are black people more fond of creamy condiments (mayonnaise, etc.) than the population at large? And why would this be?

This is a simple fact of life, and in the conventional mindset, you have to have something on your bread if you’re making a sandwich, because ‘everyone does it.’ I personally avoid ordering sandwiches unless I have no other choice, because I dismember them anyway, and I too can’t get waiters to accept I don’t want anything on the bread. (I do, however, like watching their heads explode when I put coffee creamer in my iced tea). If you’re in a really belligerent mood, you could try sending the sandwich back to the kitchen until they make it right instead of just eating it, but if you’re on a tight schedule, that’s not always an option. Sadly, you, like me, are probably stuck dealing with someone else’s idea of what constitutes a sandwich. As far as the ‘black people and creamy condiment’ issue, that may be a local preference, because in most places I’ve lived, black people tend to prefer things like mustard or bbq sauce on their sandwiches.

But then again, how can I be sure? Maybe it is American blacks who you are wondering about? There are millions of black people worldwide and they could be less fond of creamy sandwiches, but then I don’t think this is something that the average person would spend precious time wondering about, be they black, white or striped.

I find that to be disgusting And lets face it, We are living in a world where the basics just aren’t enough for most people, so they have to had in this case fat and cholesterol to add to the taste and to their already unhealthy lifestyle

Mustard is not greasy and has less calories than mustard. I have mustard only on my sandwiches because I like the taste. The fact that it is lower in calories and saturated fat is a bonus. I am a black woman, so it is your imagination that black people are more fond of creamy condiments than the population at large.

The ONLY reason I would go ahead and put any condiment on a sandwich is if I were not happy with or not confident in the main ingredients. I see a condiment sometimes as a compliment to a hot dog or burger, and sure I am a fan of mustards, but I like to taste what is in the sandwich and not was is covering it up. I think that all condiments should be offered on the side and not automatically on it; this would save on waste and certainly (at least hopefully) increase overall quality.
