Why do foreigners think Finland is still a part of Russia when it has been independent since 1917?

you seem to be labouring under some illusion: i don’t know of anybody who thinks finnland is a part of russia, nor have i ever heard anyone even jokingly suggest that. and though some people seem to have shaped their idea of finland on monty python’s song… well, even this one only says ‘it’s so near to russia’. 🙂

I have never heard of such a mistake. I would guess on the contrary that most foreigners don’t know Finland used to be a part of Russia.

Until I read that Lee Harvey Oswald had entered Russia through Finland when he defected, I didn’t even know they were connected. I thought of Finland as being next to Amsterdam.
