Is it historical fact that North American eastern woodland Indians used ‘Ugh’ as a greeting? Is it offensive or a caricature to attribute such to them? James Fenimore Cooper, who (whether racist or not), was probably in a position to know, routinely has Indians greeting with ‘Hugh,’ an alternate spelling.
