I seriously doubt that this is even a class issue. I don’t think rich people worry about their food being contaminated by touching food which a poorer person has selected. And since cash register technology has advanced so much in the last fifty years, poor people no longer have to worry about accidentally having to pay for an item belonging to a richer person. I think it’s to help the cashier know when to hit the ‘total’ button.
