OK, now that I have calmed down… I have many friends who are deaf. My opthamologist is deaf. They work for the federal government, including the post office and the treasury departmeent. They are computer technicians, own their own businesses, artists, work in banks. They work at retail places such as Walmart and Publix. Yes, at residential schools for the deaf they are teachers, but also they are administrators, teachers’ aides, dormitory supervisors and residential staff, recreational staff, maintenance and gardeners. My deaf boyfriend was the first deaf member of the Carpenters Union in Connecticut. Most of all, they are proud of their culture, which starts with a capital ‘D’ for Deaf!
